If you are looking for somewhere to type code, close this tab and keep your editor — VS Code is free and excellent, and nothing here replaces it. This page is for the other reader: the one who went looking for a GitHub Copilot alternative because they wanted the work done, not a better place to do it.
Copilot completes the line you are typing. It is fast, it sits in the editor, and it assumes you are the one writing the code. If that is the job, the real alternatives are Codeium, Continue, Supermaven or Cursor — all editor-shaped, and all a better answer than this page.
You describe the outcome and it produces the files. It reads code, writes code, runs commands in a sandbox, and posts the result back — while you are not watching. There is no cursor to sit beside, because there is no editor. The unit of work is a finished thing, not a completed line.
No local working tree, no file open in front of you, no keyboard-speed feedback. For careful work inside a large existing codebase, an editor plus an inline assistant beats this, and it is not close.
Anything you would rather delegate than do: a script, a scaffold, a one-page site, a data cleanup, a summary of an unfamiliar repo. Things worth having and not worth an afternoon.
Discord, Telegram or a browser tab, on a phone. Not because that is a better place to program — it is not — but because it is where you are when the thought arrives.
Most people use both. The editor stays where the careful work happens; the agent takes the errands. And if you came here because a Copilot bill got annoying, the useful comparison is not Ergod versus your editor — it is Ergod versus Claude Code, which is the same shape of tool and where the real trade-offs live.
Searches for hosted-environment alternatives are usually about not wanting to maintain a machine. Ergod does give you a hosted sandbox with files that persist between sessions — but you reach it by asking, not by opening an IDE in a browser tab. If you want a remote editor, Codespaces and its alternatives are the right shelf.
Free tier, no card, nothing to install. Ask it for something and see what comes back.
